WHITFIELD COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Early voting begins today in Georgia for the state’s primary election on May 19.
The election is separate from the local primaries currently taking place in Tennessee.
Officials in Whitfield County say voters can begin casting ballots early as several high-profile races are set to appear on the Georgia ballot.
Among the most closely watched contests are the Republican and Democratic races for governor, along with the race for the United States Senate.
The Republican gubernatorial primary includes eight candidates and has drawn significant attention in recent weeks.
Voters will also decide several state House and Senate races during the primary.
Shaynee Bryson, Supervisor of Elections, said first-time voters should be prepared before heading to the polls.
“If you are a first-time voter, you need your government-issued ID. You are not allowed to use a cellphone in the booth, so we highly suggest bringing some kind of cheat sheet with you. That can be a sample ballot or even something written on a piece of paper at home,” Bryson said.
The 14th Congressional District race is also back on the ballot, with ten Republican candidates running.
Election officials encourage voters to check their county’s website for polling locations, hours, and additional voting information.
The Georgia primary election is scheduled for May 19.
