OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (WDEF) – Another local teen has been detained by ICE.
Daniel Romero’s family tells us he is currently being held in their custody.
Students from Ooltewah High School hosted a fundraiser to help pay for the legal fees.
They tell us they hope to bring awareness to Daniel’s story.
One teacher from the high school says this is a concerning matter, as she claims that with the American government’s knowledge, Daniel has been waiting for four years to get into an asylum program where he then could work towards citizenship.
She says he’s thus far completed all of the correct steps to be entered into the program.
Rebekah Langford, Ooltewah High school teacher says, “He has a Social Security card. He has a work authorization card. He did everything right. So, I don’t think that people who came under another administration or a different policy should be punished when that was the law or was allowed at the time.”
The teen’s family tells us he has since been moved from Alabama to a detention center in Louisiana.
Saturday night you will hear from not only his mother and father, but from Daniel himself, as News 12 has made contact with him, since being in the facility.
