CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The City of Chattanooga Stormwater Management Division hosted its annual Rain Barrel Distribution Day, giving residents an opportunity to invest in sustainable water practices at a reduced cost.
Organizers said property owners could purchase a 50-gallon Ivy Rain Barrel for $76.50, nearly half off the retail price of $162.99.
Residents were allowed to purchase up to ten barrels per property and apply for rebates, making it easier for households to adopt environmentally friendly solutions.
Erik Hancock, Public Information Specialist, explained the broader impact of the initiative.
“Rain barrels are just a small piece of the puzzle to all these different things we can do to improve the way we utilize stormwater on our property,” Hancock stated. “When everyone in the community works together to manage stormwater properly, plant native landscaping, utilize plant gardens, and use rain barrels, it makes a huge difference in the cleanliness of our waterways.”
Officials elaborated that rain barrels serve as an effective way to capture and conserve rainwater.
By collecting runoff, they help reduce strain on stormwater systems, lower water bills for residents, and promote more sustainable water use across the community.
As the program continues to grow, organizers say community participation remains key.
By working together and adopting simple conservation practices, residents can play a direct role in protecting local waterways and improving environmental health for future generations.
