CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Members of the Chattanooga community gathered at Ross’s Landing to take part in another “No Kings Day” protest.
Demonstrators lined the area, voicing their concerns and chanting, “Donald Trump has got to go,” as part of the organized event.
Braxton Stratton, Tennessee Chairman for United Against the Elites, says while protests can raise awareness, he believes lasting change requires more than demonstrations alone.
“Protesting is important, but it is not enough on its own. Real change comes from building strong, independent communities that can stand on their own. You cannot create change by only shouting into the streets. It takes organization and action,” Stratton said.
Some protesters say participating in events like this comes with growing concerns.
Shani Palmer, a protester, says although she values her right to speak out, she feels there is increasing pressure in everyday life.
“People are having legitimate fear now. I do not know how much this is talked about, but a lot of people are afraid of their employers seeing them at a protest or finding out they do not support the same political views. There is a kind of fear creeping into everyday life for working people,” Palmer said.
Not everyone at the event shared the same perspective.
Steve Page attended the protest with opposing views, hoping to engage in conversation with participants.
“That is what people do not understand. If you look at Korea, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and other conflicts, leaders from both parties have made similar decisions. Obama did it, Bush did it, Clinton did it. These kinds of actions have happened before, but people react differently depending on who is in office,” Page said.
Despite differing opinions, the demonstration remained peaceful and orderly.
Organizers and attendees alike say events like this are meant to encourage dialogue, even among those who may not agree.
