NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF)- The bill that would require Tennessee school districts to count the amount of undocumented students enrolled has been pushed back again.
The Tennessee Senate was supposed to debate and vote on Senator Bo Watson’s proposal.
However, he elected to push back that bill to a committee for unstated reasons.
This followed protests earlier this week by local teachers, students, and activists who accused him of attempting to turn educators into immigration agents.
Senator Jeff Yarbro of Nashville, one of the six Democrats in the Tennessee Senate, said he wondered if it’s a sign the bill does not have the support it needs.
Sen. Yarbro said, “I mean, that doesn’t mean it’s officially dead necessarily, but I think what it shows is that the pushback that representatives and senators are receiving from school districts, teachers, principals, and citizens across the state is actually having an influence as it should.”
The bill will be discussed in a Senate committee next week.
It has already passed in the House.
