CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Being a good writer is a great skill to have. But you need to work at it. Third through 8th grade students are getting that vital training each Monday at Eastgate Public Library. Let’s put pen to page in tonight’s “What’s Right With Our Schools.”
“For the name of the program is the Eastgate authors and it is an amazing program that’s geared towards kids grades third through eight although we do have some first and second graders should come, which is amazing and basically it’s teaching kids every week different ways to write in about how to write for others and two others,” Lee Hope, Assistant Director of Youth Services, Chattanooga Public Library said.
“Every Monday from 4:30 to 5:30. Kids will come and they will hear a story or read a book,” Hope says, “and then they will have different writing prompts and learn how to write.”
She continues, “And so they look at different themes every month so this month they’ll be talking all about different fables all kinds of different fables. Last month they talked about heart so they talk about things like love and they wrote about love and they wrote about courage and just lots of different themes and it’s just magical.”
“I love writing so and when I come here, I learn a lot more about writing and I can be around people who also like to write,” Ariana Rehagen, student, Wallace A. Smith said.
“Every month it’s something different so if if a kid doesn’t enjoy like a certain type of writing the next month, it’ll be on something else. It’s not just writing. It’s a little projects that go with their writing to give them like a reason,” Chasity Rehagen, parent, said.
“After school, we were just go home and do stuff there and our mom figured out out about this program so we just decided to come try it out and when we came here we figured out we liked it so we’ve been coming here for a long time,” Drew Warren, Student, CSLA, said.
“Well, I like coming here because I learned a lot about riding and I learned how to develop my skills here,” Palmer Van-Gorp, home school student said.
“It’s kind of fun and it gives you ideas to create stuff,” Sarah Warren, Student, CSLA, said.
“So important for kids to learn how to write. It goes right along with reading literacy and math literacy and every other subject but also I believe it teaches kids that they have their own voice and they can be heard and you can write it down,” Hope says.
