Chattanooga Fire Department Celebrates 150 Years With Commemorative Book

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – To commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the Chattanooga Fire Department, a hard bound, full color book was created and a copy presented to the Chattanooga Public Library Friday morning.

The fire department officially went into service in November, 1871. 105 citizens volunteered for the department until 1880 when it brought on its first paid firefighters.

The history of the department is preserved in the new book and it’s available to read on the third floor of the library.

Chattanooga Department Fire Chief Phil Hyman said, “I think this is a neat addition to add here to the archives at the library. We’ve put a lot of work into this history book. We’ve had a number of individuals working on this history book. We just had our 150th anniversary and there’s a rich history of the fire department and we want to share that.”

The third floor of the Chattanooga library is filled with shelves of local and regional history.
