MCMINN COUNTY, (WDEF) – The McMinn Regional Humane Society has released another SOS list as the shelter continues operating at maximum capacity.
Last week, News 12 reported on the shelter’s previous SOS list.
However, because of the continued influx of animals, the humane society has been forced to issue another urgent plea to the community.
Veterinarian Dr. Ronnie DeForrest said the shelter’s challenges stem from the high number of animals coming through its doors.
Because the humane society is city owned, it must continue accepting animals, even when space is limited.
As always, staff members are encouraging pet owners to spay and neuter their animals to help reduce the number of unwanted litters entering the shelter.
Dr. DeForrest said one of the biggest obstacles is convincing pet owners that the procedure is important.
“People don’t want you messing with their rights. To a lot of people, their animals are theirs. They own them, so you can’t tell them what to do. I think that’s our challenge. It’s educating people. I think that’s the biggest thing,” DeForrest said.
As of Wednesday evening, four dogs were still waiting for adoption or foster homes.
The humane society said they must be adopted or fostered by Tuesday, July 14, at 2 p.m.
The organization also recognizes that the cost of pet care can be overwhelming for some families.
Staff members say anyone in need of assistance with spay and neuter services, training, food, or other pet resources is encouraged to reach out.

Shelter officials hope community support will not only help the animals currently in their care but also reduce the number of pets needing shelter in the future.
