EAST BRAINERD, Tenn. (WDEF) – A shooting near East Brainerd Road and Reserve Way Tuesday evening remains under investigation, and News 12 spoke with bystanders who described what they believed happened and the chaotic moments after gunfire erupted.
According to the Hamilton County 911 incident page, one person was shot.
When News 12 arrived at the scene, a vehicle could be seen off the roadway with what appeared to be bullet holes through the driver’s side window.
Several bystanders shared what they believed happened.
However, none of those accounts have been confirmed by the Chattanooga Police Department.
One anonymous bystander said, “Okay, I heard that the shooting involved two juveniles. Somebody got shot. That’s all I know. I don’t know if they were kids or teenagers, but yeah.”
Another anonymous bystander stated, “I got stopped in here, after work. I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ People were saying somebody got shot.”
Two other bystanders also told News 12 they heard the vehicle was shot while it was moving.
One anonymous bystander explained, “Supposedly it was a shootout. They were driving in the cars, and they were shooting at each other. What we pretty much gathered is that they pulled out of the neighborhood and somebody shot at them. One of them fled, and the others ran out of the car.”
Again, the Chattanooga Police Department has not confirmed the information provided by the bystanders.
News 12 also spoke with an employee at a nearby business who said she and her coworkers initially believed they were hearing fireworks before realizing it may have been gunfire.
“I’m just concerned for the area because I have family that lives in these apartments over here, and that’s scary,” said Olivia Winner, a local business employee. “It could have been anybody.”
Winner said employees heard several loud pops before one coworker looked outside.
“About an hour ago, we heard several pops go off. We were wondering what it was. My coworker came outside to see what was going on, then ran back inside and said, ‘Get down. I don’t know if that’s gunshots or fireworks.’ I got down too. After we didn’t hear anything else, we saw a car over there with the window shot out, I guess, or broken. There were people running around the shed area, but I didn’t see much. I was just scared and in shock. I didn’t know it who was or what to think.”
News 12 is working to learn more and will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
