CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. (WDEF) – As communities across the country celebrated Independence Day, the City of Chickamauga held its own festivities to honor America’s 250th anniversary.
In partnership with Walker County, the city hosted its Independence Day Celebration on Gordon Street, bringing residents together for an afternoon of patriotic fun, live entertainment, food, games, and community spirit.
Organizers said events like these help strengthen the community while celebrating the nation’s history and the freedoms Americans enjoy.
A special procession honored Walker County Gold Star Mother Jo O’Neal, who lost her son, Samuel Stephen Lance, during the Vietnam War.
Jennifer Tarvin said the recognition meant a great deal to her family.
“My mom’s in the parade today. She’s a Gold Star mother. We lost our brother in 1970 in Vietnam, so they’re going to honor her today. Happy birthday, America,” Tarvin said.
Georgia State Representative Steve Tarvin, who is also O’Neal’s son in law, reflected on the significance of the country’s milestone anniversary and the sacrifices made by service members.
“These people, like those people, our son died for us so we could continue to do this,” Tarvin said.
The celebration continued with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence before ending with a fireworks display that lit up the night sky.
As America marked 250 years of independence, Chickamauga’s celebration served as a reminder of the nation’s history, the sacrifices made to protect its freedoms, and the importance of coming together as a community.
