CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Hundreds braved the heat to cheer on the USA men’s soccer team in their World Cup match versus Australia on the Chattanooga Riverfront.
They enjoyed the American squad securing their spot in the knockout stage of the 20-26 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Australia on Friday afternoon.
The match was the first of several that will be shown as part of Soccer Live on the Chattanooga Green.
One fan, Ed Lambert, said, “It’s great to see everybody buying in and the camaraderie for the same team. It’s great to be part of such a big event
Fans proudly sang the national anthem, and celebrated both of the American goals which occurred in the first half.
Even children like Amari, Ben, and Noah recognized how special this tournament is for our country.
Amari said, “This is a lot of fun. It’s been a great time here so far.”
Ben added, “This is fun because we’re winning 2-0.
Noah said, “It is like magnificent out here they’re doing good.”
Another fan, Jenny Lambert, added of the American’s performance Friday, “Oh my gosh, this is so exciting to see this appearance from them and to see them just representing on the field. We are ecstatic.”
Chattanooga getting to host Spain is also a point of excitement for the fans who showed up, as Lamine Yamal is a crowd favorite.
There will be matches shown on the big screens throughout the weekend including Spain’s match against Saudi Arabia at noon on Sunday.
