CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Union Gospel Mission hosted its annual Easter Community Dinner this afternoon, serving Chattanooga’s unhoused community with food, resources, and a message of hope.
More than 500 warm meals were served during the event, along with toiletry items and support from local organizations.
Attendees say the gathering provided more than just a meal.
“It’s nice to get a hand up, not a handout. It gives you something to light up your day and reminds you that people care about us. We are somebody. We are not society’s leftovers. We are human beings,” said Jay Proudlove, who attended the event.
Organizers say the dinner is meant to create a sense of belonging during the holiday.
Rev. Jon Rector, Executive Director of the Union Gospel Mission, said the event feels like a reunion each year.
“We love doing the holiday meals because it feels like a big family reunion. Just like with our own families, you only see them a couple of times a year. That is true for us too. Easter is such a special day, and we are always grateful to be able to share it with the community,” Rector said.
Rector explained the mission behind the event is to remind people they are not alone.
“The food is great and everyone appreciates a good meal, but it is also about being a blessing. Whether someone needs a hug, a conversation, or prayer, we are honored to be here and support them.”
Local nonprofit Simply Grace TN partnered with the mission, providing what they call “blessing bags” filled with essential items.
Founder Danielle Hoskins said the goal is to meet both physical and emotional needs.
“I’ve been blessed in my life, and the Lord has laid it on my heart to help others. He continues to give me more opportunities to serve, so it’s all Him,” she said.
Attendees say events like this help restore a sense of dignity and hope.
“We feel judged sometimes and misunderstood. It can make you feel like you do not have worth. But there is always hope, and places like the Union Gospel Mission remind us of that,” said Proudlove.
Organizers say they hope the event continues to uplift and encourage those in need, reminding everyone that compassion and community can make a lasting impact.
