CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — For years, the sound of wheels on concrete and dogs playing nearby has filled this Southside space.
But soon, that sound will quiet — as bulldozers move in to start something brand new.
Beginning November 10th, the City of Chattanooga will shut down ChattTown Skatepark and Chew Chew Dog Park to make way for a complete transformation.
City officials say the project will replace the existing park with a multimodal family skatepark that includes an event area, new restrooms, and a state-of-the-art concrete skatepark designed for all skill levels.
“What’s gonna be happening is we’re putting in a full concrete skate park designed by California Skateparks — they’ve built Olympic parks,” said Brian Smith, Director of communications for Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors. “We’re expanding this park to almost twice its size, and the dog park will remain, with separate areas for large and small dogs. Between them, there’ll be enough space for events and community gatherings.”
The city is investing $4.4 million in the project, which officials say will create a more inclusive, family-friendly destination for residents and visitors alike.
Local skaters say the upgrade is coming at the perfect time.
“It’s a little overdue, in a sense,” said Ryan West, a longtime skater. “There’s a lot of parts that are kind of falling apart or the skate lines getting rotten and everything, but it’ll be a nice refresher. This place has a beautiful community — it’s just good to get out and be part of it.”
Construction is expected to take nearly two years, with completion set for Fall 2026.
During the renovation, the hockey rink at the site will remain open to the public.
