Hixson TN (WDEF)-People in Hixson had the chance to speak up about Chattanooga’s budget this weekend.
District 3 Councilman Jeff Davis hosted a town hall Sunday to gather feedback on the city’s proposed budget amendments. He and District 1 Councilman Chip Henderson are supporting an alternative to Mayor Tim Kelly’s “1.93 compromise” on property tax rates.
Some residents expressed concerns about how higher property taxes could affect their livelihoods. District 3 resident Deborah Henning, a retired substitute teacher, said the increase would hit hard.
“My concern is obviously as a retired person. I’m on a fixed income, and as a substitute teacher I won’t be able to afford to continue doing that with this reassessment and the tax increase,” Henning said. “I’ll have to find another job that pays more, and that’s going to take away from a very important piece of our community, which is substitute teaching.”
City Council is expected to vote on the amendments Tuesday, August 26.
