Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)The Chattanooga Zoo is celebrating a major milestone — honoring President and CEO Darde Long for 40 years of service. Her career has helped transform the Zoo into one of the city’s most popular attractions.
“I’m looking forward to a few more years having this kind of wonderful experience,” Long said during the celebration.
The Zoo was filled with more than just animals Tuesday morning — it was filled with community members, friends, and leaders recognizing Long’s impact.
State Senator Bo Watson praised her leadership, saying, “Thanks to the friends of the Zoo, obviously 40 years, and of course Long working for 40 years here at the Zoo leading this, has really been an amazing journey. I grew up here in Chattanooga, so I’ve been around the Zoo my whole life, but its transformation under her leadership has been really extraordinary.”
Under Long’s direction, the Zoo expanded exhibits, brought in new species, and created more educational opportunities for families.
She reflected on some of the biggest changes, including the arrival of giraffes and the construction of the new front entrance.
“Bringing giraffes were never on our radar, so when they came in, they really changed and took the Zoo to a new level, if you will. And the new front entrance, same thing. All of these were really big leaps that took us to a place that we hadn’t been.”
And while the milestone marks decades of dedication, Long says she’s not stepping away just yet.
“Right now, that’s a really good place to be, and I’m sure someone will emerge who’s ready to take my place — but they’re going to have to push hard,” Long said with a smile.
For now, she says she’s still having fun — and still looking forward to the future of the Zoo she helped build.
