HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) – Hamilton County Schools, in partnership with the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga and the Hamilton County Mayor’s Office, has unveiled plans for North River Elementary School, a new facility that will serve the DuPont, Alpine Crest, and Rivermont communities.
The $48 million project is scheduled to open in fall 2027, located on the site of the North River Family YMCA.
The school will share facilities with the YMCA, including a gymnasium, and provide expanded opportunities such as swim lessons, after-school programs, and summer camps.
Leaders say the collaboration will create a true community hub, blending academics with health and family engagement.
The proposal for North River Elementary was first introduced in 2023, followed by listening sessions and a school board vote in late 2024.
Officials argue that consolidating three aging schools into one modern building will improve efficiency and student learning.
Still, the plan has sparked pushback.
Some parents at Alpine Crest and Rivermont worry about losing their small neighborhood schools, calling the new model a “mega school.”
School and county leaders, however, say the project is designed to set a new standard in public education and community partnership.
