COHUTTA, Ga. (WDEDF) – In Cohutta, Georgia, a new movie is in production titled Set Free.
News 12 went behind the scenes to bring you a closer look at what to expect from this upcoming film.
Brandon Cannon, director at Soul Purpose Entertainment, has drawn inspiration for the story from his long career in criminal justice.
“I’ve been in criminal justice since 2004, so 21 years,” Cannon said. “This movie is based off the totality of things I’ve seen in my career. In this particular movie, it’s very tragic, but it has a redeeming arc.”
The film tells a story of love, redemption, and the difficult choices that can lead to lasting consequences.
The director explained that the central theme is forgiveness, even for those who have committed serious wrongs.
“Just like in life, we can be forgiven. Even for heinous crimes, you can ask God to forgive you. It’s not excusing the behavior, but you can be redeemed in that aspect. That’s what this movie’s about — redemption and grace. Grace covers it all,” Shinnick said.
The production is being filmed locally, providing opportunities for area talent, businesses, and the town itself to be featured on screen.
“This is a great place to come to,” Cohutta Mayor Ron Shinnick added. “It’s a family town. It’s a little piece of Mayberry that we are losing in our country. People can come here, enjoy great entertainment, meet great folks, and take in the whole feel and vibe.”
Lieutenant Ryan Fowler with the Cohutta Police Department shared that the movie blends fiction with truth.
“It’s fiction, but it’s based on true events. It’s about faith, hope, and overcoming. A lot of people in this country right now need faith and hope. Many are feeling down, and I encourage folks to come see the movie, restore their faith in humanity, and their hope for the future,” Fowler said.
Filming will continue over the next year, with the premiere set for June.
Whitfield County Sheriff Darren Pierce expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
“I’m very excited that we’re able to partner with the production company and show people what God can do, that He can forgive you. Nobody is too far gone,” Pierce said.
With its message of forgiveness and hope, Set Free aims to inspire audiences both in Cohutta and beyond.
As the cameras keep rolling in the heart of North Georgia, this small town is stepping into the spotlight, proving that powerful stories can be told in even the quietest of places.
