CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – City leaders from across Tennessee came together in Chattanooga for the Tennessee Municipal League Conference, a three-day event focused on collaboration, innovation, and celebrating the success stories of cities throughout the state.
Mayor Julian McTizic Sr. of Bolivar kicked off the final day with applause and appreciation.
“It has been a wonderful past three days,” McTizic said. “Give the staff a round of applause!”
The annual conference gives elected officials and city staff the opportunity to share ideas, learn from each other, and explore new solutions to common challenges.
Mayor Paige Brown of Gallatin emphasized the importance of the recognition ceremony, saying: “We’re recognizing outstanding accomplishments in cities across the state today, and outstanding officials, including Mayor of the Year and Public Servant of the Year. It’s just a fun morning wrapping up a great weekend at the conference.”
Among the cities honored was Cleveland, Tennessee, recognized for its full downtown redevelopment effort.
The Excellence in Economic and Community Development Award was presented to the city for its work transforming the Inman Street corridor and revitalizing surrounding businesses and parks.
Mayor Kevin Brooks accepted the award on behalf of Cleveland.
“I’m so honored to be here to represent the City of Cleveland, Tennessee—the winner of the Award of Excellence today by the Tennessee Municipal League,” Brooks said.
The redevelopment project focused on reducing Inman Street from four lanes to two, widening sidewalks, and adding greenery and accessibility features.
The upgrades not only improved pedestrian safety but also connected residents and visitors to a refreshed Johnston Park, the city’s oldest park.
“It was the Inman Street–Johnston Park Project, right in the middle of our historic downtown,” Brooks explained. “I’m so thankful that so many members of the team were here, because it was their hard work and effort that made this award possible.”
Mayor Brooks also noted the project was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the dedication of city staff.
“We’re going to take this award home to Cleveland, and we’re very proud,” he said.
