HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — August 5, 2025, is an important date for the process of adding a new area code for phones in our area.
Tuesday, the new code and ten digit dialing became official.
The new area code does not affect anyone with the current 423 code.
But new phone numbers will now get the 729 instead.
That’s because we’re simply running out of numbers.
Also starting Tuesday, you have to dial the area code whether you’re making a local call or not.
The Tennessee Public Utility Commission has been easing us into the new system for a year now.
But beginning Tuesday, we’ll start seeing some 729 numbers in our area.
