CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As the new school year begins, leaders from the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) offered expert insight into how schools can better protect students and staff.
The nonprofit organization says every campus should start with basic safety measures: lock and monitor all exterior doors, ensure students can’t bypass weapon detectors, and conduct behavioral threat assessments when necessary.
NASRO also encourages schools to use multi-disciplinary teams to prevent violence and highlights how school resource officers (SROs) can build relationships with students that may help avert future threats.
Another topic they’re weighing in on? Cell phone bans. NASRO leaders say limiting phone use can help students stay safer and more focused during a crisis.
The organization’s executive director has testified before Congress and been featured on national networks like Fox News, CNN, and NPR.
