Hixson, TN (WDEF)- Back-to-school shopping is in full swing — and this weekend, families across Tennessee are getting a much-needed break at the register.
The state’s annual Sales Tax Holiday is underway, and shoppers aren’t wasting any time grabbing deals on everything from pencils to popular name-brand shoes. For three days, school essentials like backpacks, clothing, and supplies priced under $100 are exempt from state sales tax — making a noticeable difference for families trying to stay on budget.
“We’ve been busy and excited to be here helping customers,” said Grant Clark, Operations Manager at Academy Sports + Outdoors in Hixson. “It really helps families out.”
Clark says store traffic has been steady since Friday morning, as parents stock up ahead of the new school year.
“When you figure in local tax — not just state — that extra nine and a quarter percent hits hard,” Clark said. “If you’re shopping for multiple kids, that savings adds up. This weekend really helps ease that burden.”
And the savings don’t stop there. Beginning Sunday, Academy Sports is launching a 10% discount for teachers, administrators, and school staff through August 31.
“It’s a way to show appreciation,” Clark added. “Teachers are not only getting their classrooms ready — many of them are parents, too. We just want to help them out and thank them for what they do for our families.”
The Sales Tax Holiday runs through midnight Sunday, both in stores and online. Retailers are encouraging shoppers to check item eligibility beforehand, as only select products under $100 per item qualify for the exemption.
“You want to make sure you’re making informed decisions,” Clark said. “Especially when it comes to things like shoes — anything under $100 is covered, but it’s per item, so check the list before you head out.”
