CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — An increase in the cheerleading fee for one Hamilton County School will not be something families will cheer about.
The Hamilton County School Board approved an increase in that fee from five hundred dollars to nineteen hundred dollars.
That is an increase of two hundred and 80 percent per student.
The school says this is in order to increase the quality of the cheer squad and provide more opportunities for the students.
Some school board members, such as Karista Mosley-Jones, wondered if this could price out some students.
“I just want to make sure that in the request, is the school trying to figure out if there is a hardship for students how they’re going to handle that, because I know (large fees) are normal, but for some it’s not normal. That’s a lot of money. It’s more than my sorority dues,” said Mosley-Jones.
A school representative said they were looking into dealing with the hardship issue.
