CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Ten years after a domestic terrorist attack shook the heart of Chattanooga, the community is coming together to remember the five servicemen who lost their lives on July 16, 2015.
The Chattanooga Area Veterans Council (CAVC) will host a “Ten Year Remembrance Tribute to the Fallen Five” this Wednesday, July 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wreath of Honor Memorial in Tennessee Riverpark.
The solemn ceremony will pay tribute to the four U.S. Marines and one U.S. Navy Sailor who were killed in the line of duty.
The event will feature wreath placements by active duty Marines and Navy personnel, a bagpipe performance, and remarks from military officials and local leaders.
“The whole purpose for setting the remembrance was the fact that it is a milestone, so we’re really going to try and get the people involved on site, on scene, that day,” said Captain Mickey McCamish, U.S. Navy (Retired), who will emcee the event. “For example, Commander Tim White. Tim was a commanding officer for the Navy Operations Support Center. He was the one who did see the terrorist and did fire a shot at the terrorist.”
Other featured speakers include Brigadier General Kevin Jarrard, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly, Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp, and CAVC President Bill Norton. Commander Tim White, U.S. Navy (Retired), will also speak, offering firsthand reflection of the day he courageously responded during the attack.
Attendees will also hear the National Anthem sung by Melissa Bayless, and the ceremony will close with Commander Diron Cundiff playing “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes.
The public is encouraged to attend and help honor the lives lost, the bravery shown, and the resilience of a city forever changed.
