CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Since the pandemic, we’ve seen our fair share of gas price swings, but now, just in time for the holiday, the cost at the pump is bringing back some major pre-2020 nostalgia.
Here in Chattanooga, drivers are seeing an average of $2.61 a gallon.
That’s nearly 15 cents lower than just a week ago, and over 45 cents lower than this time last year.
According to GasBuddy, the cheapest gas in the city is $2.35 while the most expensive is just shy of $3. And it’s not just a local win.
Nationally, the average price per gallon is expected to dip to $3.15 on the Fourth of July. That would mark the lowest holiday average since 2021.
Analysts say the price drop can be tied to two main global events that are easing the pressure on oil markets.
GasBuddy reports that while diesel prices have gone up slightly, regular gas continues trending downward thanks to that cooling tension and a recent uptick in OPEC production.
Whether you’re road tripping across the region or just headed to the lake, this is one summer weekend where it’ll feel a little easier to fill up the tank.
