CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Museum Center at 5Points turned up the energy for local students. Last week, rising fifth through seventh graders dove into hands-on learning at a two-day STEAM camp focused on the science of energy. Their curiosity and creativity are sparking bright ideas, showing us exactly What’s Right With Our Schools. News 12’s Robert Hanley stopped by to see the excitement in action.
“This camp is based on steam education as like I said it’s two days of experiments based on energy. We are partnering with the American Museum of science and energy from Oak Ridge to provide this camp and we hope to be a resource for our schools to help supplement their education over the summer,” said Lucy Rymer Executive Director 5Points Museum.
“I think it’s really awesome and cool to do these stuff because like like kids have never experienced like high tech things that we never seen before so I think it’s really cool to be here in this museum,” said Alex Guajardo, a participant of the STEM camp at 5Points Museum.
“It’s really a broader mission, obviously to celebrate stem and steam education and what this camp does in our two days of education is really just plant that seed and really hope that kids get curious and kids get excited for the future of their many possibilities in the world of steam. We think energy is really at the heart of all science really and the heart of experiments and so we hope that this is a fun way you know when we think of kids, we think about energy they’re full of it and I hope that this is a good way for them to spend their summer and make learning a lot of fun. We hope that students can universally begin to question and be curious about the things around them. How do we get energy? Where does it come from at what cost the really important aspect of that education is continuing in that education it’s really being a vibrant and curious sponge so we’re giving them items to think about and to explore and maybe to start questioning things around them in a different way,” said Adam Romano, Curator of Arts.
“I think one of the cool things I’ve learned about energy is that there’s so many different types and like there’s potential energy, still energy, kinetic energy, which is like already moving energy and a bunch more,” said Eleanor McRae, a participant of the STEM camp at 5Points Museum.
“We are also happy to partner with the American Museum of science and energy. We’re both Smithsonian affiliates so we’re happy to be able to come together to provide this camp and are happy to have such great partners in the region that can supplement our programming as you know we are at history arts and cultural center. What we don’t normally provide is that science education and so we are happy to be able to partner with other organizations to help us provide that for our community,” said Rymer.
