CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – This morning, the YMCA hosted its first Why I Ride Bike-A-Thon at its downtown family location.
The event encouraged participants to raise money for causes they are passionate about.
Organizers say each rider chose a specific program to support, with funds going directly toward community initiatives.
Mathia Blomstrom, Associate Executive Director, says the event highlights the impact of YMCA programs.
“Each rider is riding for a purpose,” Blomstrom said. “It supports the programs we provide to the community. We have a cancer survivor program, income-based memberships, summer day camp, swim lessons for students, and adaptive programs.”
Some riders chose to support the Miracle League, which provides opportunities for individuals of all abilities to play baseball.
Lauren Schuman, who rode to support adaptive programming, says the program creates an inclusive environment.
“Anyone with any physical or cognitive abilities can sign up and play,” Schuman said. “It gives our players an opportunity to go out there and be all-star baseball players.”
Others participated to help raise funds for children to attend YMCA summer camp.
Mark Brock, who rode to support income-based memberships, says the goal is to provide a safe and positive space for kids.
“I think every kid should have a place to go in the summer where there is a positive environment,” Brock said.
For some, the cause hit closer to home.
Ethan Pope says he rode in support of the Livestrong program, which helps individuals affected by cancer.
“I had a friend whose wife was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer a few years back,” Pope said. “She lives in a region where they say they do not recognize that type of cancer, but I have learned the program exists all over the country.”
Pope says he hopes his efforts will make a difference.
“I want to ride to make a difference for people like her, as well as others,” he said.
The YMCA says every dollar raised goes toward strengthening community programs and improving quality of life.
Organizers hope this first Bike-A-Thon will grow into an annual tradition that continues to support those in need.
