CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As families prepare for Easter, local shelters are asking the community not to gift bunnies as holiday presents.
We spoke with the Humane Educational Society, which says many families get a bunny without realizing the level of care and attention they need to truly thrive.
Many rabbits given as gifts around the holiday end up in shelters or are kept in small cages, which can negatively impact their well-being.
Jeanine Cloyd, Director of Development, explained, “A better thing for Easter is a stuffed bunny for your child. Then, as a parent and child together, you can research how to take care of them. You really need to think past the cage, because that is a very lonely and sad life for a bunny.”
Cloyd emphasized that proper care goes far beyond a cage and requires time, space, and commitment.
If you would like to celebrate the holiday with some adorable bunnies, the Chattanooga Zoo will be hosting its annual Hug a Bunny event on April 3rd and 4th.
