ATHENS, Tennessee (WDEF) – The City of Athens has won an ongoing feud with Glenn Whiting.
The showdown began during the pandemic when the city cancelled their annual fireworks show for the public and only allowed city employees and their families to attend.
Whiting was outraged as a member of the public.
He showed up at the event to protest and took video of the employee kids.
He claims they took him away and called him a pedophile.
Whiting filed another lawsuit claiming the city blamed him for why they cancelled the fireworks show the next year.
Then he showed up to complain about settlement negotiations going slowly and was angered that the council blamed him for stalling.
So a third lawsuit was filed.
Finally, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals put it all to rest.
They sided with the city and slapped two attorneys with penalties.
Whiting’s attorneys will have to pay court costs by the city.
And they fined each of them an additional $15,000.
Mayor Larry Eaton had this reaction:
“This past Friday the City of Athens received rulings from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals related to three of Mr. Whiting’s Federal cases that were filed years ago and have been on appeal for some time. It is very reassuring to see that the 6thCircuit Appellate Judges, after an exhaustive review of the full record, agreed with the various trial court rulings over the years. These appellate decisions reconfirm what our administration, employees, citizens, and councilmembers knew all along. On behalf of the City of Athens I want to assure the citizens, businesses, and visitors that we are committed to moving forward and building an even great community.”
