ROME, GA. (WDEF) – On Saturday, Shawn Harris spent the day campaigning with supporters in Rome, Georgia, as the race for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District heads toward a runoff election in April.
Shawn Harris, Democratic candidate, shared his confidence in the campaign with supporters as the race continues.
“Right now, the Republican Party is still fighting a crowded field. I am confident that I am going to pull Democrats, independents, and yes, Republicans who will vote for me. Come April 7, we are going to shock the world.”
The Democratic candidate was joined in Rome by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, where Harris spoke about issues, he said matter most to voters.
Harris spoke about the financial challenges many people are facing.
“For everybody here in Northwest Georgia, if you live in Northwest Georgia, I guarantee you paid a lot for gas or a lot for diesel today. In addition to that, you, like everybody else in Georgia, are struggling to try to make ends meet.”
Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of Transportation, addressed the crowd, explaining that he wants to help bring new leadership to Washington and focus on policies that strengthen working families.
“You are so much more powerful than they want you to believe. In Washington right now, they want you to believe that what is coming from the powers that be is an unstoppable wall, a wave that nobody can do anything about. And yet most Americans already believe we ought to be doing something different. Right now, most Americans believe it is the wealthy who should be paying their fair share in taxes, not the other way around.”
He then continued by saying leadership must come with accountability and a commitment to serve the people.
“We are recognizing just how much has to change in this country and how much is changing in this world. In order to change that, you need oversight. You need Congress, a branch of government in our constitutional system that has been flat on its back but needs to get up and stand up for the American people and look over the shoulders of the executive branch.”
One supporter, Dr. Tara Overzat, told News 12 she is excited about the direction of the campaign and believes the community is ready for a change.
“A lot of people are upset with Trump’s policies right now, and the cost of living is skyrocketing. That affects everyone, regardless of party. We will keep doing the work and having hope that tomorrow is going to be a better day, as long as we come together and keep working.”
At several points during the event, supporters in the crowd could be heard chanting “USA, USA, USA.”
