CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) As warmer weather rolls in, people across Chattanooga are getting back outside—and for many, that means gardening. On Saturday, residents lined up at the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center to pick up free trees and shrubs.
The giveaway is part of the Free Tree ReLeaf program, a collaboration between EPB, the City of Chattanooga, and Reflection Riding. Organizers say the partnership is key to the program’s success, combining resources and expertise to reach as many residents as possible.
“Either way, 1,000 today, so it was really exciting to see such a strong turnout,” said Lauren Russek, Lead Naturalist of Native Plant Horticulture with Reflection Riding. “One of the things I love most about this morning is seeing such a beautiful mix of people. Some have joined us for many seasons and made this a community routine, and others are here for the very first time—equally excited about putting trees in their yards.”
Russek emphasized the benefits of planting native species. “ From the energy savings potential to improving the city’s tree canopy and helping manage stormwater, we get really excited about encouraging people to plant because of the benefits it offers,” she said.
With 1,000 trees and shrubs available, residents could choose from several native species, including chestnut oaks, post oak trees, persimmons, blueberries, yaupon holly, serviceberry, and sweet pepperbush.
The Free Tree ReLeaf program not only helps residents beautify their yards but also contributes to the environment by supporting wildlife, improving air quality, and adding shade across the city.
With every tree planted, Chattanooga is growing greener—one neighborhood at a time.
