U.S. intelligence officials said Russia has been providing Iran with information that could help identify American military positions in the Middle East. Officials familiar with the matter said the intelligence has included the location of U.S. warships, aircraft, and troop movements as tensions in the region continue to rise.
The reported intelligence sharing marks a new point in the growing ties between Moscow and Tehran. U.S. officials have described the support as broad enough to raise concern inside Washington, especially as Iran continues military actions involving American targets in the region. Some of the information is believed to have come from Russian surveillance capabilities, including satellite-based tracking.
Officials have not publicly linked the intelligence to one specific Iranian attack. Still, the development has added to fears that the conflict could widen beyond direct fighting already underway. The situation also highlights the deeper defense relationship between Russia and Iran, which has expanded in recent years through cooperation tied to weapons systems, regional strategy, and shared opposition to U.S. influence.
