CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Today the Heritage Center highlighted Medal of Honor recipient George Jordan as part of its continued celebration of Black History Month.
Tina Cahalan Jones, founder of the Slaves to Soldiers Project, gave a presentation focused on African American military service.
The project raises awareness and honors the lives of nearly 400 Black men from Williamson County, Tennessee, who escaped slavery to fight for Federal Union forces in the United States Army and United States Navy during the American Civil War.
Jones says courage and citizenship define Jordan’s legacy.
“And when I was walking in today, I saw that one of the banners said courage and citizenship and I feel like those two are the two hallmarks of George Jordan’s story. Think about his citizenship was framed by his service.”
