DUNLAP, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Dunlap community gathered today to celebrate veterans.
They met at Sequatchie County Highschool to get out of the frigid weather.
There was supposed to be a parade, but the cold weather hampered those plans.
Sequatchie County Schools got the day off, and many students were in attendance.
Speakers included representatives of the local VFW, the American Legion, and special guests.
Members of the Sequatchie County High School band volunteered to play a medley of military songs.
We were told that for the veterans coming home, sometimes the best thing you can do for them is just lend an ear.
Retired Air Force Colonel Chris Dooley told us, “One of things that they we do is just listen. That’s the biggest thing because many of the folks have things going on, but at the same time they don’t have anyone who can listen to the things that they have to say.”
Veterans day is a day to celebrate the veterans in our community, but for some it’s a somber day, too.
Remembering the ones who are with us, and the ones we’ve lost.
US Army Vietnam Veteran Thomas Hickey told us, “It’s been a long time since I served in the Vietnam war, ’67 and ’68. So the times have changed. I think now people are more supportive of the veterans today as I see, and they understand and realize the sacrifice that the men paid while they were away from home. And maybe the way that they were welcomed home. I see that as a better way now.”
