CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – For years, American flags have been displayed along Chattanooga’s Veterans Bridge as a tribute to the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The display has become a recognizable part of the bridge and a visible symbol of the community’s respect for veterans.
In 2014, the City of Chattanooga introduced a sponsorship program that allows residents to honor individual veterans by having a flag flown in their name beginning on Veterans Day.
The program was created in response to requests from community members who wanted a way to personally recognize the service of family members, friends, and fellow veterans.
A $75 sponsorship provides a flag that will be flown on the bridge and a mayoral proclamation recognizing the veteran’s service.
The proclamation is presented to the honoree or their family and can be kept as a personal keepsake.
Space on the bridge is limited due to the number of flag poles available, and the city places sponsored flags on a first-come, first-served basis based on when applications are received.
The Veterans Bridge continues to serve as a place of reflection, remembrance, and community honor for those who served in the armed forces.
Applications and additional program information are available on the City of Chattanooga’s website.
