A cargo jet operated by UPS Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky at about 5:15 p.m. local time Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was en route to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
According to the Associated Press, the crash occurred near the intersection of Fern Valley Road and Grade Lane, at the southern edge of the airport.
Television and photographs showed large flames and a thick plume of black smoke rising from the scene.
The Louisville Metro Police Department reported a fire and debris at the crash site and issued a shelter-in-place order within a five-mile radius of the airport.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said first responders were on site and asked for prayers for those affected.
