FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WDEF) — The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) was performing a traffic stop in the parking lot of a local high school on Thursday.
Deputies spotted an empty holster in one of the vehicles, leading to concerns that there may be a firearm in or around the school property.
The DCSO requested help from a K-9 unit that specialized in firearm detection, and the Geraldine Police Department.
After conducting a thorough search of the school grounds, a handgun was located on the property near a school building.
The suspect who was driving the vehicle with the empty holster was taken into custody on unrelated charges and booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center.
Investigators say the vehicle also contained additional items that are suspected to be stolen property.
The DCSO affirms that there was no immediate threat to students or staff at any time, as the incident occurred after school hours.
This is an ongoing investigation.
“The safety of our students, school staff and community is always a top priority. We are thankful this incident was resolved quickly and without injury.”
“God Bless!”
