CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- For the 8th straight year, an annual tradition was held on the steps of the federal courthouse in downtown Chattanooga.
A reading of the U.S. Constitution was conducted.
This is in honor of Constitution Day, which is next Wednesday on September 17th.
That is the day in 1787 when the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia by 39 different representatives.
Speakers took turns reading sections of the document, including many students from Notre Dame High School.
U.S. Federal District Court Judge Charles Atchley, Jr. says this provides these kids with an opportunity to understand the totality of our country’s framework.
Judge Atchley said, “I think the most important thing is that it reinforces what they believe about the Constitution and it reinforces perhaps what they might think the Constitution says, but they’re confused about. People have lots of strong opinions about what it might say and about what it might not say, but this is where they can get their answers.”
The Constitution has seven articles, 27 amendments, and a preamble.
It was last amended in 1992.
