Norfolk Southern’s latest “Forging a Better Tomorrow” report highlights projects that are making a tangible difference in communities across the country, including a new development in South Chattanooga.
The Clifton Hills Alton Thread Trail is set to stretch 2.6 miles, reconnecting neighborhoods long divided by railroads and highways. Early funding from Norfolk Southern has helped keep the project on schedule, ensuring the community will soon have improved access to green space, transportation, and downtown Chattanooga.
Plans for the trail include a new pedestrian bridge, upgraded stormwater systems, and connections to the Riverpark and downtown areas.
Kristin Wong, Director of the Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact, emphasized the broader significance of the project:
“Of course, access to trails is super important for the well-being of the community, but there’s so much more involved. Creating connectivity, access to jobs, new green spaces—it just improves environmental resilience overall. We’re thrilled to have been able to partner on this project and look forward to the trail’s completion.”
Partners say the trail represents more than just recreational space—it’s a step toward restoring access and opportunity for South Chattanooga residents, providing a path to both community connection and economic growth.
