CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Young professionals are rethinking what makes a community the right place to call home.
A new survey shows that safety and housing affordability rise to the top of the list, with a large majority of Gen Z and Millennials saying those factors matter most when choosing where to live.
But quality of life goes beyond affordability. Access to nature and outdoor activities also scored high, with three-quarters of respondents saying it plays an important role in their decision-making.
Many say they’re leaving behind crowded urban centers in favor of communities that offer more space, balance, and connection to the outdoors.
The survey also highlights what motivates young adults to relocate.
More than half say career and business support, along with financial incentives, could encourage them to move to a new city or state.
And when looking at the basics, a strong local job market and manageable cost of living remain central considerations.
Other factors shaping decisions include whether a community is walkable, offers local amenities, and has reliable transit.
Together, these preferences paint a clear picture. Younger generations want safe, affordable places to live, but they also want opportunities, accessibility, and a strong sense of community.
