HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) will participate in a targeted traffic enforcement initiative this Labor Day weekend to address a growing number of deadly crashes on Highway 58.
The campaign, called Project 58 x 58, will run from Friday, August 29, 2025 through Monday, September 1.
It includes a coordinated effort by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the Chattanooga Police Department (CPD), and other agencies.
Their mission is to reduce fatalities on Highway 58.
The roadway has seen a rise in crashes and deaths in recent years.
“Since January 1, 2025, there have been 234 crashes on Highway 58 resulting in 5 fatalities. Of those 234 crashes, 102 involved injuries.”
-Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office
From 2022 to 2024, Highway 58 saw 1,230 crashes with 422 injuries and five deaths.
“During the next few weeks and beyond this operation, residents traveling on Highway 58 can expect to see an increased HCSO presence as we target speeders and impaired drivers. Many of our residents in this area have expressed concern over the amount of speeding occurring on Highway 58 and as we attempt to address these concerns, our goal is to change driver behavior through education. However, if we cannot reach you through education, rest assured we will reach you through enforcement,”
-Austin Garrett, Hamilton County Sheriff
During Project 58 x 58, law enforcement will be stationed along Highway 58 to enforce speeding, impaired driving, and reckless behavior.
Extra patrols will also be deployed in other problem areas of Hamilton County.
Because part of Highway 58 runs through Chattanooga, the city’s police department is also joining the crackdown.
“The Chattanooga Police Department is committed to keeping our roads safe for all users. Heavy traffic on Highway 58 brings greater risk, and our enforcement efforts focus on reducing crashes and encouraging responsible driving. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and CPD is dedicated to doing our part.”
-John Chambers, Chattanooga Police Chief.
Both agencies will be posting updates about Project 58 x 58 on their social media.
