Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)- Dalewood Middle School welcomed back one of its own this week as NBA rookie Ace Bailey returned to the halls where his basketball journey began. The school honored Bailey with a special jersey presentation, celebrating not only his rise to the professional ranks but also the inspiration he brings to the next generation of students.
“Not a lot of people can say they came back to their middle school and give back, not just for their school but to their community,” Bailey said. “So it’s a blessing. This is what we do it for — get big, come back, give back to your city and community, pour back into the kids so they can do the next thing for the generation.”
Known for his dedication, respect, and leadership as a student, Bailey’s teachers and coaches said he was the kind of student who inspired everyone around him.
“Ace has always been so tall, so a little clumsy, but I could see what he was trying to do with the basketball,” said one former coach. “We worked on a lot of different directions for what he wanted to do, because at that time he was still growing so fast. We worked so hard to get him to where he’s at today.”
Bailey didn’t stop at words. He also donated a brand-new outdoor basketball court, giving students a place to practice, play, and dream just like he did.
“The boys basketball players always talk about wanting to be the next Ace Bailey,” said the current basketball coach. “Him coming back today gives the kids a chance to see the product of the work he put in”.
From jerseys to a brand-new court, Bailey’s visit reminded students at Dalewood Middle School that with hard work, dedication, and strong character, big dreams really can start at home.
