CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF)— Hundreds of families filled the Tennessee Riverpark for the 8th Annual Back-to-School Bash, transforming the waterfront into a vibrant hub of learning, laughter, and community support.
From face painting and interactive STEM exhibits to free backpacks and haircuts, the event offered something for every student gearing up for the first day of school.
“This event is all about family partnership,” said Caitlyn Steward, District Coordinator of Community Schools. “It’s about celebrating the start of school and making sure our students are first-day ready. We have a ton of partner support and vendors out here just to make sure our families have what they need and want.”
More than 50 community partners joined forces to provide essential resources—including health screenings, school supplies, and internet access sign-ups—to help eliminate barriers for local students.
“We have our partners at the YMCA here supporting food needs, the City of Chattanooga’s Office of Family Empowerment, and our Community Forward team,” Steward said. “Greater Emmanuel Church is providing the meals today, and we even have free haircuts.”
Hamilton County Schools staff say the focus is simple: ensure every child starts the year strong.
“We want our students and families to feel supported,” Steward added. “Whether that’s understanding bus schedules, navigating registration, or just making sure kids are getting enough sleep and have the supplies they need—this is what being ‘first day ready’ is all about.”
Classes begin Wednesday, August 6, and for many families, the bash provided a much-needed boost to kick off the school year with confidence.
