CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A new proposal in light of the recent rise in property values across Hamilton County was given Wednesday.
Hamilton County Commissioner David Sharpe proposed a tax freeze for senior homeowners.
He says that in his district, some tax bills went up over 150 percent.
Chattanooga City Councilman Ron Elliott is currently pursuing a similar policy within city limits.
Commissioner Sharpe says the whole county should look at it.
“This proposal will aim to protect our seniors, particularly on fixed incomes from being priced out of their homes, which is a real possibility,” said Commissioner Sharpe.
Several other commissioners voiced their support for the policy.
However, Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp said he had concerns about the proposal, saying the county already has a property tax relief program.
