CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – In East Chattanooga, the fight to reduce gun violence is being led not just by law enforcement, but by neighbors.
Groups like the 423 Chain Breakers and Community Haven are on the front lines, using trust, presence, and compassion to break cycles before they begin.
The Chain Breakers, many of whom are formerly incarcerated, walk the streets of high-risk neighborhoods, build relationships, and de-escalate conflicts before they turn violent.
Since launching, they’ve helped lower crime in areas like Avondale and Bushtown.
Meanwhile, Community Haven provides safe spaces, mentorship, and youth-centered events that bring families together and foster belonging.
Together, they host outreach events, share meals, and offer support.
Organizers say the connections they build are what truly prevent future violence… by giving people hope and alternatives.
Both organizations are part of a growing movement in Chattanooga that focuses on healing, not just policing.
