CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Tennessee families looking to stretch their back-to-school budgets will soon get a break at the register.
The state’s annual sales tax holiday is set for Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 27.
During the three-day event, shoppers can purchase a range of school related items without paying state sales tax, whether they are shopping in store or online.
The exemption applies to personal use items that meet certain price limits.
That includes classroom basics, clothing, and even technology like laptops and tablets, provided they fall within the state’s outlined thresholds.
While the savings can add up, not everything is tax free. Some items, like business use electronics or high-end accessories, do not qualify.
Price limits also vary by category. There are price caps of one hundred dollars per single item for both clothing and school supplies as well as a fifteen hundred dollar cap on technology which can include tablets as long as the item stays under fifteen hundred dollars.
Shoppers are encouraged to check the official list of qualifying and non-qualifying items on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website before they shop.
The tax holiday is part of Tennessee’s continued efforts to provide financial relief for residents.
The state does not collect personal income tax and ranks among the lowest taxed states in the country.
Since 2012, lawmakers have passed more than $5.1 billion in tax relief.
For many families, the event marks a welcome opportunity to save on essentials during what can be one of the most expensive shopping seasons of the year.
A complete breakdown of what is and is not included in the tax holiday can be found on the Tennessee Department of Revenue website. You can click here to view the page.
