CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Chattanooga’s Public Works Department has announced the upcoming closure of a portion of the Riverwalk.
Starting July 14, 2025, a portion of the Riverwalk near Erlanger Park will remain closed through April 2026 for construction.
The closure is expected to affect locals who use the Riverwalk for commuting and recreational activities.
City officials say the decision was not made lightly and is part of the broader “One Chattanooga” vision focused on long-term growth and public safety.
Public Works says it explored multiple detour options but found none to be safe or practical.
“We recognize and deeply respect our biking community, and we wholeheartedly care about their well-being. Our overarching principle of safety for all citizens will always guide our decisions,” Chattanooga’s Public Works Department.
Councilwoman Raquetta Dotley proposed a detour through Alton Park.
Local cyclists have agreed to conduct a test ride to evaluate its safety and viability.
Officials say updates on the test ride and any potential new detour routes will be shared in the next few weeks.
