CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The goats are back on Maclellan Island, and they’re already making a big impact.
Five goats and one guard dog were brought to the island three weeks ago to help clear out overgrown vegetation.
A caretaker visits daily to feed them and check their health, and they have a secure enclosure in case of storms or rising water.
Jim Stewart, Executive Director of Chattanooga Audubon Society, spoke with News 12 about the goats’ transition back to the island.
Here is what he told us:
“We’re thrilled to have the goats back for the second season at McClellan Island. The purpose here is to clear away the invasive plants that love to live on the island here. We were very successful last year, having them here through the summer”
Volunteers can help out by signing up through the Audubon Society after a brief training.
And if you want to keep up with the goats, their caretaker shares regular updates on YouTube at Circlenstables or Circle N Stables.
