Of course my sister is taking off work to attend George Jones funeral Thursday. And I really wish I were with her. She allows she's always noted similarities between Possum and our late father. Both drank alcohol to excess. Both always answered the call to work or perform. In both cases, those were often interchangable. I've passed along my favorite Possum story. On his autobiography tour in the mid 80's he told of how Tammy was talking stuff about being with Porter Wagner. At the Elliston Place Friday's Porter goes to the men's room. George follows…grabs Porter's package and growls "I wanted to see what Tammy's talking about.." Then he tells the Nashville TV reporter…"Porter didn't move around much on stage, but when you grab his d**k you oughta see him dance."
Being comfortable in one's own skin is something that's always come easy for me. Couple of weeks ago I walked in somewhat different worlds….the 4 Bridges Arts Festival, full of $5,000 art pieces…to Chattanooga Roller Girls full of…..well, different crowds but I had a blast (different levels of intensity) just hours apart. Last week, went to Mocha, Sharon Kelly's place on Brainerd. Luther Vandross tribute act…pre ceeded by 3 stand up comics. African American comics. We were the only white folks in the place. Oh, the race based hilarity that ensued! Go with the flow. A few years ago I had comps to both the Symphony and Opera Association's silent auction and gourmet food and fine wine tasting….also had comps for the Tough Man Contest….just 200 feet away and down the hall. I walked in both worlds that night….noshing on brie and caviar….then Budweiser….I dressed for both….and for neither. Yep, a neo-Nerhu shirt, linen pants, and of course…you top off an ensemble where there are guys in $4,000 suits….and black sleeveless t shirts with… Jeruselem Cruisers. Go with the flow.
Rest in Peace, Possum. Wish I could squall at your funeral. Cause I know I would.
