Maybe the concern over people coming into the country without knowing how to speak English is misplaced. Even our elected leaders don't speak it very well.
Case in point: Carlus Mosier from Varnell, Georgia. City Councilman Carlus Mosier, who complains that Mayor Dan Peeples has "a personal vandanna" against him.
English may be a second language for Councilman Mosier, I don't know. Varnell is located in Whitfield County, between Dalton and Cohutta. It has a population of 1,587 -- 763 males and 824 females, 87.9% white. The estimated median household income is $48,100. I know the Whitfield County schools teach English; obviously it was not a favorite subject of Councilman Mosier.
Is there no educational requirement whatsoever for someone to hold an office where you actually make rules that affect peoples' lives and incomes?
Lest you think I'm being too hard on the poor councilman for a misspeak, he said it not once but twice. It wasn't a misspeak.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press cleaned it up and printed what Councilman Mosier meant to say: "vendetta." Whether it's the TFP's job to clean up someone's statement is worth debating.
Hamilton County school board member Janice Boydston will have a clean record if she stays out of trouble for a year. Judge Rebecca Stern has ruled Boydston is eligible for judicial diversion in the shoplifting case against her. That means she never has to admit that she intentionally left the Lookout Valley Wal-Mart with $31.18 worth of make-up and related items she didn't pay. She can continue to tell the story that the items accidentally fell into and under her zipped purse and under that bag of birdseed.
Nobody's going to buy that -- especially with the video showing otherwise and the loss prevention officer testifying otherwise -- but she can continue to say it, she is not guilty of anything, and a year from now there will be no legal record that there was even an incident in which she was involved.
I know that frustrates some of you. Rick called this morning to express some of that frustration. But you've got to let it go.
Otherwise, anytime you oppose Ms. Boydston politically you might be accused of having a personal vandanna against her.

(10/27/2009 11:10:15 PM) All I can say is that while makeup is a good thing for some, it doesn't work magic! I One would think if you steal something it would be of use. Obviously she is not in the practice of using the makeup in the manner in which it was intended. |
