Leach, the head coach at Washington State, is known for two things. One is offense. The other is his odd affinity for pirates. Yes, pirates. Leach has often spoken about his adoration of the nautical marauders. As for his offense, Leach is known for directing potent, quick-passing offenses. Think former Kentucky coach Hal Mumme, whom Leach coached under.

Despite a lack of talent at Washington State, the Cougars rank 36th in scoring and 28th in total offense in the nation. That’s not too shabby and a clear indication that Leach knows how to move the ball and score points. Somewhat surprisingly, Leach’s team, which is 9-2 and 6-2 in the Pac-12, is giving up just 23 points per game, which ranks 37th in the nation. That’s respectable out west.

This year, Leach’s team is good but not great on either side of the ball. Leach also has a quirky personality that could rub some donors the wrong way. The same could be said for recruiting relationships. The Cougars’ 2017 class ranked No. 51 in the nation according to Rivals.

Moving from Washington State to UT would be a huge step up for Leach. There’s no comparison between the two programs. The Cougars are the second most known team in their state. Tennessee is the state school with better facilities and resources.

Leach has been a hot commodity before but hasn’t landed an elite job. He could have other offers and, frankly, make an odd choice.

Final Verdict

Leach would be entertaining – on the field and at the podium. However, it’s hard to see him as Jones’ replacement unless the Vols get turned down by other candidates.
